TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity is intended for medical oncologists, hematologists-oncologists, hematology-oncology fellows and other healthcare providers involved in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Appreciate how patient age and performance status and disease-related factors affect the selection of therapy for newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
- Assess the biologic rationale for the evaluation of Bcl-2 inhibition for AML, and recall published research data with venetoclax in combination with a hypomethylating agent or low-dose cytarabine.
- Consider the FDA approval of venetoclax in combination a hypomethylating agent or low-dose cytarabine for patients with newly diagnosed AML not eligible for intensive induction therapy, and discern how these regimens can be optimally integrated into nonresearch care algorithms.
- Design a plan of care to recognize and manage side effects and toxicities associated with venetoclax-based therapy for patients with AML to support quality of life and continuation of treatment.
