Target Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of general surgeons and surgical oncologists that treat breast cancer.

Learning Objectives and Goals

  • Apply the results of emerging research in breast cancer clinical management to treatment and referral strategies for patients with early stage disease.
  • Educate pre- and postmenopausal patients with ER-positive breast cancer about the risks, benefits and duration of adjuvant endocrine therapy.
  • Recognize the variability in routine ER, PR and HER2 testing and implement appropriate guidelines to maximize accurate pathologic assessment.
  • Develop a treatment plan for patients with HER2-positive breast cancer considering tumor size and nodal status.
  • Effectively utilize biomarkers and genomic risk classifiers to estimate patient prognosis and select/recommend adjuvant therapy.
  • Counsel patients about the value of sentinel lymph node biopsy and its impact on further local and systemic treatment.
  • Discuss the risks and benefits of partial breast irradiation and the clinical trials evaluating this technique with appropriately selected patients.
  • Recall the design and eligibility criteria for ongoing breast cancer clinical trials and consent or refer appropriate patients for study participation.

For the fourth year in a row, the American Society of Breast Surgeons has elected to partner with our group to host the official satellite symposium at the 11th Annual Meeting. Once again, we have developed an innovative concept that we believe will help create a truly beneficial and worthwhile event.

After several years of focusing on the presentation of clinical data, we will take a different approach and concentrate on the practical application of research findings in cancer management and patient care. To that end, the meeting will not include didactic presentations and rather will rely upon the expert perspectives of clinical investigators commenting on actual early breast cancer cases. Prior to the meeting, we will invite all Society members to submit challenging cases from their own practices for consideration. Our scientific staff in conjunction with the invited faculty will select specific cases for presentation at the meeting by the treating physician.

After each case presentation, we will poll the audience using electronic keypad devices to obtain their treatment recommendations. Members of the interdisciplinary faculty panel will then be called upon to discuss their approach to the case in the context of emerging clinical research and ongoing trials.

We are extremely excited about this event and believe the lively discussion and fascinating perspectives that emerge will provide relevant, practical and important educational information on the management of early breast cancer.

A detailed agenda will be posted in the coming weeks.
