Endocrine Treatment of Metastatic Breast Cancer: New Advances; Patient Education Implications — An Interactive Grand Rounds Series for Nurses

Research To Practice (RTP) is pleased to offer organizations throughout the United States the opportunity to host an interactive live educational activity focused on the management of ER-positive metastatic breast cancer (mBC) for their staff and/or members. As part of this program a medical oncology breast cancer investigator will travel to your community to lead a 1.25-hour, CNE-accredited session developed by the RTP scientific staff under the leadership of president Neil Love, MD that will feature a blend of didactic presentation, discussion of relevant clinical situations and cases, interactive polling of attendees using keypad devices and audience Q&A.

There is no registration fee for these events. However, preregistration is advised as seating is limited.

Each 1.25-hour session will include 5 topic modules focused on the management of ER-positive mBC. Each module will employ an identical format and feature discussion of cases from the faculty members selected to depict common scenarios encountered in clinical practice (newly diagnosed ER-positive mBC, disease progression on an adjuvant aromatase inhibitor, progression on a CDK4/6 inhibitor with endocrine therapy, et cetera). Topics addressed during the session will include the following:

Module 1: Estrogen and Progesterone Receptors; Clinical Use of Endocrine Treatment
  • Incidence of and current therapeutic paradigm for ER-positive mBC
  • Management of side effects of endocrine therapy
  • Mechanisms of action and resistance associated with common endocrine therapies
  • Biologic rationale for targeting the CDK4/6, mTOR and PI3 kinase pathways
Module 2: First-Line Endocrine Therapy for Metastatic Disease: Role of CDK4/6 Inhibitors
  • Available data with and FDA-approved indications for abemaciclib, palbociclib and ribociclib
  • Treatment duration, dose and schedule with CDK4/6 inhibitors
  • Monitoring for and management of common toxicities (cytopenias, gastrointestinal side effects, QT prolongation, et cetera)
Module 3: Second-Line Endocrine Therapy for Metastatic Disease: Role of mTOR Inhibitors
  • Efficacy of mTOR inhibition in combination with endocrine therapy
  • Prophylaxis and treatment of everolimus-related toxicities (mucositis, pneumonitis, et cetera)
  • Sequencing of chemotherapy for patients with ER-positive, HER2-negative mBC
Module 4: New Approaches Under Investigation
  • Incidence and clinical relevance of estrogen receptor tumor mutations
  • Current clinical trials of CDK4/6 inhibitors in the adjuvant and neoadjuvant settings
  • Combination strategies with CDK4/6 and mTOR inhibitors
Module 5: Assessing and Optimizing Treatment Adherence
  • Scope and clinical implications of nonadherence
  • Barriers to treatment adherence for patients
  • Assessing and optimizing patient adherence to therapy with oral treatment

Target Audience:
This activity is intended for oncology nurses, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists and other healthcare providers involved in the treatment of ER-positive metastatic breast cancer.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the influence of estrogen and/or progesterone receptor positivity on long-term outcomes and the selection of systemic therapy for patients with advanced breast cancer (BC).
  • Discuss the benefits and risks associated with existing and recently approved systemic therapies used in the evidence-based treatment of ER-positive metastatic BC (mBC), including endocrine agents, chemotherapy regimens and biologic treatments.
  • Recognize the FDA-endorsed indications for the commercially available CDK4/6 inhibitors, and discern how these agents can be optimally employed in the nonresearch care of patients with mBC.
  • Educate patients regarding the unique side effects associated with CDK4/6 inhibitors, and develop preventive and emergent strategies to reduce or ameliorate these toxicities.
  • Understand the biologic rationale for therapeutically targeting the mTOR pathway in patients with ER-positive mBC, and educate patients regarding the FDA-endorsed role and unique side effects associated with everolimus.
  • Appreciate the detrimental effect of poor adherence to treatment, identify and monitor potential causes of this phenomenon and develop a plan to effectively assess and support compliance for patients receiving oral anticancer therapies.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance communication and facilitate ongoing dialogue between the oncology nurse and patients with mBC to optimize clinical and quality-of-life outcomes.

A CNE credit form will be given to each participant at the conclusion of the activity.
